POLITICAL PRISONERS STILL ON AGENDA FOR AZERBAIJAN

The next meeting of the task force for alleged political prisoners will likely be postponed.

Saadat Bananiyarly, a member of the task force and head of the Azerbaijan bureau of the International organization on human rights, told Trend that the meeting, originally scheduled for July 1, had been put off for an uncertain period.

She explained the decision by the tense work schedule of the members of the body. “Novella Jafaroghlu, a member of the task force, will return to Baku on July 3. The participation of another member, Chingiz Ganizada is also unclear, as he is back to the city on June 30 only,” Bananiyarly said.

Her words were echoed by Gultakin Hajiyeva, also a task force member. Hajiyeva, however, linked the postponement of the meeting to the upcoming session of PACE’s Monitoring committee for migration, refugees and population, in Baku.

At its first meeting on June 10, the task force approved a decision to focus both on “political prisoners” and protection of human rights in general.
