The former members of the special police forces (OPON) of the Azerbaijan’s Interior Ministry released from imprisonment held a news conference on 4 October 2005 at the International Press Centre. They said that due to some problems in their documents they are subject to red tape from the part of the local authorities, Trend reports.

The Chairman of the Committee on the protection of rights of the OPON members Famil Suleymanov informed the journalists that having attended the jails during some days he met with 9 former OPON members imprisoned on the events of March 1995. В"They are looking forward to the president’s decree on pardoning and do not lose the hope to be in the list of the pardoned”.

According to the human rights defender, there are currently about 15 former OPON members wanted and residing beyond the country.

Although they want to come back home they fear to be detained. В"10 years have passed from the time of those events and we repeatedly applied to the relevant bodies on removing the decision on the arrest of the OPON members. However, we have not received a positive response.

One of them was bored by living beyond his homeland and came back and was immediately arrested”, Suleymnaov said.
