Preventing corruption administratively in the education system is impossible, the Azerbaijani Education Minister, Misir Mardanov, stated at a Press Conference on 29 November. Organized by the OSCE Baku Office, the conference was dedicated to combating corruption in the higher educational institutions, Trendreports.

He stressed that the Government is concerned about corruption in the education system. The Minister added that to combat the problem, effort within the society needs to be increased. In addition, Mardanov supported the initiative of organizers of the event to create a public council to fight against the corruption in education. Touching upon the proposals to give independence to the education institutions, the Minister emphasized that this was not a constructive idea. As an example, the Minister revealed 7 independent institutions where the level of corruption in these institutions was higher than others. Azerbaijan is not prepared to put up with it, he said.

Mardanov brought up the recent decision on creating a unified city school department in Baku city and liquidating the regional education department. He felt sure that the positive results of these reforms would be reflected within a year. The Minister touched upon the law On education and said that adopting the most ideal law is not the solution to the problem. He felt certain that a system to implement this law should be devised.
