Status of Nagorno-Karabakh should be Resolved through Talks, but not Referendum'

Peter Semneby, the European Union Special Representative for South Caucasus, said in talks with journalists in Moscow on 12 December 2006 that status of Nagorno-Karabakh should be resolved through talks, but not referendum, Trend reports citing ITAR-TASS.

Referendum actually evolves situation which predefines the questions to be resolved within the framework of negotiations. It concerns the status of Nagorno-Karabakh. This question is the essence of talks which are hold currently, he said.

Speaking on EU position on Sunday constitutional referendum in Nagorno-Karabakh, Semneby noted that referendum' did not contribute in the resolution of the problem. EU regrets that it was held at the moment when talks between the sides were resumed." He also reminded of a recent statement spread by the EU Chairman in Brussels that the EU does not recognize the referendum' and its results.
