Azerbaijan, Baku, October 16 / Trend , M.Aliyev /
We must unite our efforts to combat the destruction of the Turkic monuments, Director General of TURKSOY Dyusen Kaseinov told Trend on Oct. 16.
According to him, the barbarian attitude towards the monuments of Turkic culture has occurred throughout the world history. "Unfortunately, it must be noted that many politicians can not resist this process. And only we, together, can save and restore them," said Kaseinov.
Head of TURKSOY noted that a fund has already been established, resources of which will be directed towards maintaining and restoring monuments.
In the occupied lands of Azerbaijan there are a total of 689 monuments, of which 13 (six of seven architectural and archaeological) assume world importance, 242 (117 architectural and 7 archaeological) - state and 434 (373 architectural and 23 archaeological monuments, 21 - gardens, parks monumental monuments, 17 works of applied art) - local.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
