The first bike lanes in Central Asia opened on Almaty's main avenue today. The bike lanes were constructed upon the initiative of the Velo-Almaty Group.
"Along the main avenue - Abay Avenue - a segregated bike lane has been built between the sidewalk and the roadway," the group said.
According to the group, the bike lane has a length of 2.5 kilometers and will allow cyclists to safely and quickly move through the city center from Dostik Avenue to the Central Stadium.
The bike lane is 2.5-meters wide. It has two lanes for traffic in both directions.
