Countries of the region themselves must solve their problems, but they must be strong so that the influential powers reckon with them, said the Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan Mammad Bagher Bahrami, says the official report by the information and press department of the Baku State University (BSU).
"The countries of the region, particularly Muslim ones, themselves must solve their problems, and therefore, they must be strong and powerful so that the major states of the world reckon with them," Bahrami said Tuesday at a meeting with the BSU rector.
BSU rector, academician Abel Maharramov received the Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan on Nov. 30. The rector told the guest about the history of the BSU and stages of development of the university, international relations of Azerbaijani universities, including with universities of Iran.
BSU has been teaching Persian language and literature for more than 60 years, and the number of the Iranian students wishing to study as doctoral candidacies at the BSU has increased over recent years.
Saying that Azerbaijan and Iran belong to same civilization, culture and religion, Bahrami mentioned the importance of strong ties between the countries, especially in the sciences.
"Our future is connected with each other," he said. The ambassador also noted the interest of the major universities of two countries - BSU and the University of Tehran, in close cooperation, exchange of students and teachers, carrying out and realization of joint conferences and projects.
"The closer the relationship between these universities will make stronger the unity of the brotherly countries - Azerbaijan and Iran," he said. The ambassador invited BSU rector to visit Iran.
Maharramov noted the importance of close ties in the areas of science such as nanotechnology, microbiology, medicine, etc., and in turn invited the rector of the University of Tehran to visit Azerbaijan. It was decided that an agreement on inter-university cooperation will be signed at future meetings.
Touching upon the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, the ambassador expressed the view of Iran, who wishes the conflict to be resolved within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
Speaking of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, Maharramov noted the double standards of leading countries and international organizations and emphasized the importance of unity and equality of Muslim countries to resolve the conflict.
BSU rector stressed the importance of meetings between the presidents of the two friendly and brotherly states.
Appreciating ambassador's activities for science and education, and in the field of diplomacy, Maharramov expressed confidence that this meeting will play a role in strengthening ties between the two countries, including in the sphere of science and education.
