MEMORANDUM ON MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN MEDIA, AZERI AUTHORITIES SIGNED

The 3-day seminar, organized by President’s Executive Power with support of Media Department of the Council of Europe, finished with the adoption of a memorandum on mutual understanding between media and Azeri authorities.

The draft document was developed by Aflatun Amashov, the chairman of the Council of Press, Arif Aliyev, the chairman of the Journalists Association �Yeni Nasil’ (New Generation), Rashid Hajili, the head of the Media Institute, Nazim Isayev, the employee of the President’s Executive Apparat, and Seyfulla Mustafayev, the head of the ANS-TV.

The document underlines existence of a dialogue between state bodies and media, which targets informing the society about issues of much interest, conduct of exchange of information, establishment of normal and transparent relations on the base of mutual understanding.

“Existence of the wrangling points between media and politicians, as well as state officials is natural, particularly, on the eve of the parliamentary elections.

But authorities should not interfere in the activities of the mass media in order to avoid any impact on the elections. In its turn, the mass media should follow ethic principles and not issue materials offending and humiliating the honor and dignity. The mass media should respect the state officials’ private life and their relatives,” the memorandum stated.

The document also stresses the urgency for adoption of the �Law on information freedom’ up to the Council of Europe standards and injection of supplements and changes into the �Law on Mass Media’.

The Council on Press and the Council on National TV and Radio Broadcasting were charged in monitoring of the observation of the memorandum.

In his turn Ali Hassanov, the Director of the Public and Political Division of the President’s Apparat, appreciated the memorandum signed as a result of the event.

The representatives of the opposition newspapers �Azadlig’ and �Yeni Musavat’ did not participate on the last day of the seminar.
