Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend S.Agayeva / Ramiz Mehdiyev, the Head of Staff of the Azerbaijan President's Executive Power, stated, while adressing a regional meeting of the Transparency International on Europe and Central Asia in Baku on 31 May, that work on the development of a draft national strategy to increase the transparency and the fight against corruption in 2007-2010 had been completed.
As the chairman of the State Commission on Fighting Corruption in Azerbaijan Mehdiyev stressed that all necessary establishments have been set up in the country to fight against corruption, Azerbaijan joined the international conventions and actively co-operates with international organizations to improve the legislative base.
Over its three-year activities the commission held numerous monitoring exercises to fight against the undesirable manifestation and submitted recommendations to the state departments to boost transparency in the country.
Describing corruption as cancer, which the country suffers from, Mehdiyev stressed the importance of unifying the state, non-governmental organizations, society and the media of Azerbaijan in struggling against this problem.
