Over 440 AIDS-infected Cases Revealed in Azerbaijan in 2007

Azerbaijan, Baku, 23 January / Trend / In 2007 over 440 AIDS-infected cases were revealed in Azerbaijan. A total of 437 people were Azerbaijani citizens and four were foreigners. Of the 437 people, 87.4% were men and 55,or 12.6% were women. This has partly (271 people, 62%) been caused as a result of drug injection. The death toll reached 48, the AIDS Struggling Center of Azerbaijan said.

In 1987-2007 the Center treated 1,379 diseased people, including 59 foreigners and 1,320 Azerbaijanis. A total of 1,117 people (84.6%) of the infected were men and 203 (15.4%) were women. The total of number of deaths through the AIDS virus totaled 195, whereas the number of those infected totaled 294. .

Of the total 1,320 who were infected, 790 or (59.8%) persons were infected through the injection of drugs, 281 (21.3%) heterosexually, 12 (0.9%) as a result of homosexual relations, 11 (0.8%) from mother to child; one (0.1%) through administration of tattoos and one (0.1%) as a result of blood donor transfusion. It was impossible to identify the source of infection in the 224 people (17.0%).

The age category of AIDS infected people is as follows: 570 people (43.2%) are aged between 30-39 years, 275 people (20.8%) between 25-29, 236 people (17.9%) between 40-49 years, 122 people (9.2%) between 19-24 years, 5 people (0.4%) between 15-18 years, 11 people (0.8%) up to 14 years, 25 people (1.9%) aged between 50-59 years, 4 (0.3%) aged over 60 years, whereas the ages of 72 people (5.5%) was not determined.
