(dpa) -  German luxury carmaker Porsche on Wednesday said it was suing the London local authority over plans by the British capital for an extra toll on gas-guzzling cars.

The toll envisaged by London Mayor Ken Livingstone was unfair, unproportional and illegally took advantage of his powers, Andy Goss, head of Porsche Cars GB said.

Livingstone intends to raise the already existing congestion tax of 8 British pounds (15.85 dollars) to 25 pounds by October 27 for cars with high carbon dioxide emissions.

The charge will be lifted for climate-friendly cars. The increased charge will be applicable for all cars emitting more than 225 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

The documents for such a legal step were filed at a London court, Porsche said. A judge will now have to decide within the next days whether to proceed with the case.

According to a recent poll, 61 per cent of the Londoners approve of increasing the congestion tax for gas-guzzling vehicles.
