Date of Next Monitoring on Bird Flu in Azerbaijan Confirmed

Azerbaijan, Baku, 18 April / Trend corr. S.Babayeva / The fourth monitoring on warning of bird flu in Azerbaijan will commence on 12 May, Press Secretary of the State Veterinary Service at Agricultural Ministry released this information.

"The monitoring will be held for a week. The laboratory examination will also be held for a week. The results will be announced on 23 May," he said.

The territories of Absheron Peninsula, Davachi, Salyan, Lankaran and Agjabadi will be monitored by a special commission -consisting of specialists from the veterinary service at the Ecology, Health Ministries, Society of Hunters.

The previous monitoring has not yet detected any virus in the Country.

Last year, the State Service carried out 12 monitoring exercises none of which revealed the virus.

The ban on hunting, use and sale of wild birds in Azerbaijan, which was imposed in autumn 2005, is still in force. All border checkpoints in the country are on medium security in order to prevent the spread of bird flu in the country.

The State Service recommends keeping the domestic birds in closed areas to avoid their contact with the wild birds which spread the disease in most of the cases.
