Domestic production covers 95 percent of food demand in Azerbaijan: minister
Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 12 / Trend , U.Ismayilova/
Domestic production covers 95 percent of Azerbaijan's food demand under a state program to guarantee agricultural security, Agriculture Minister Ismat Abbasov said.
"The government aims to cover the country's entire food demand via local production," the minister said.
Abbasov said the issue will be solved by 2010.
"The ministry is taking measures to develop agriculture and improve conditions for farmers," he said.
The measures comprise issuing loans and subsidies to farmers and constructing special refrigerators in the regions, he said.
A key task of the ministry is to cover the country's grain demands, Abbasov said.
Grain was planted in Azerbaijan in autumn 2008 for harvesting in 2009.
"We expect 1.6 million tons of harvest. This is enough to satisfy the food demand," the minister said.
