Unemployment benefit increases by almost 7 percent in Azerbaijan since early 2013

As of July 1, 2013, around 37.2,000 people were officially registered as unemployed in Azerbaijan, about 41.7 percent of which were women, according to a report from Azerbaijan's State Statistics Committee. The number of unemployed has increased by 1.2 percent (around 36,791 people according to early 2013 data) in the country since early 2013.

According to the report, the average unemployment benefits payment in Azerbaijan amounts to 248.5 manat. The amount of the benefits has increased by 6.7 percent since early 2013.

As of early July, 2013, the economically active population of the country equaled 4720.9,000 people, around 4480.6,000 of which work in labor positions. Thus, as of July 1, the number of persons working for hire, amounted to 1,480,000 people, in addition, 896.2,000 people worked in the public sector and 583.8 thousand people were employed in the private sector.

In addition, the number of those working in the oil sector amounted to 37.3,000, in the non-oil sector, 1442.7,000 people were employed. Around 1438.2 thousand people among those who are working for hire, are involved in non-agricultural activities.

According to the report, as for June 1, around 21.8 percent of those working for hire are involved in some sort of production, 6.8 percent of which are involved in construction, 6.2 percent- in processing, 2.8 percent-in agriculture, forestry and fishery, 2.5 percent- in extractive industries, 2.1 percent - in the production and distribution of electricity, gas and steam, 1.4 percent - in water utilities and waste removal and processing.

About 23 percent of those working in the service sector work in education, 18.9 percent- in trade and vehicle repair; 8.8 percent in rendering medical and social services; 6.6 percent- in public administration and defense and social security; 4.9 percent- in transport and warehousing; 3.9 percent - in recreation, entertainment and the arts; 3.7 percent - in professional, scientific and technical activity; 1.8 percent- in communication and information, 1.8 percent - in financial and insurance, 1.6 percent - in rendering administrative and assistance services, 1.4 percent - in tourist accommodation and catering, 1 percent - in other spheres, as well as 0.8 percent - in real estate.

The official exchange rate for July 22 is 0.7844 AZN/USD.
