Iran has drilled about 206,607 metres of gas and oil wells since beginning of the current solar year (started on March 21), managing director of the National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC), Hamid Reza Golpayegani said, Iranian Donya-e-eqtesad newspaper reported.

A total number of 95 wells were drilled during the period he said, adding that the figure includes 43 development operations, two exploration drillings and 50 repair and completion operations.

Besides two exploration wells, the National Iranian South Oilfields Company, Iranian Central Oilfields Company and Iranian Offshore Oil Company share 57, eight and six wells respectively, as well as 22 wells having been drilled under contracts, he added.

Some 30,851 metres of drilling operations have been realised under EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contracts, Golpayegani said.

Iran holds the world's third largest proven oil reserves and the second largest natural gas reserves and plans to use foreign companies for various oil and gas related projects.

The country's total in-place oil reserves have been estimated at more than 560 billion barrels, with about 140 billion barrels of extractable oil.

Moreover, heavy and extra heavy varieties of crude oil account for roughly 70-100 billion barrels of the total reserves.
