Iran trades 2,044 MW of electricity with neighboring countries

Iran has traded 2,044 megawatts of electricity with neighboring countries on April 13.

The country exported 1,648 MW of electricity to Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Armenia, and Turkey, the country's IRIB news agency reported on April 14.

The country also imported 396 MW of electricity from Armenia and Turkmenistan on the same day.

Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

The country seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion in investments for the construction of three new power plants.

Deputy Energy Minister Sattar Mahmoudi said in November 2013, that Iran annually exports 8 billion kilowatt hours of electricity to neighboring countries.

"The mentioned figure is about 3 percent of the country's total output," the ILNA News Agency quoted Mahmoudi as saying.

He remarked that Iran eyes to export electricity to Europe via Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan.

Iran's total electricity generation stood at 263 billion kilowatt hours during the last Iranian calendar year (ended on March 20), which indicates an increase by 3.6 percent compared the preceding year, according to the annual report of the country's energy ministry.
