Iran will increase the length of its pipeline system by 1,957 kilometers this year, National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC) Director General Jawad Ouji said today.
The Iranian new year begins in March.
"The length of the country's pipelines was 32,055 kilometers last year and the figure rose to 32,506 kilometers in late June this year," he said. "As winter this year is expected to be cold, we intend to develop fully operational and peripheral sections of the NIGEC to achieve gas supply stability."
According to BP, Iran's gas reserves in subsoil hit 29.61 trillion cubic meters in late 2009. Last year, Iran consumed 131.2 billion cubic meters of gas, which is 13.1 percent more than in 2008.
