Int'l financial institutions eye to provide assistance to Uzbekistan’s energy sector

Representatives of the International Financial Institutions (IFI) expressed readiness for technical assistance in the implementation of the proposed reforms in the energy sector of Uzbekistan, Trend reports with reference to the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan.

A round table was held on October 23 with the participation of a number of IFIs, the Minister of Energy, deputy ministers of finance, as well as investments and foreign trade, heads of the State Assets Management Agency, Uzbekneftegaz JSC, Uztransgaz JSC, National Electric Networks of Uzbekistan JSC, Thermal Power Plants JSC, Regional Electric Networks JSC.

Foreign participants in the discussion were representatives of the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, a number of international legal and audit companies, as well as international experts and consultants.

The round table was dedicated to further reforming the energy sector of Uzbekistan.

“IFIs make a significant contribution to the planning and implementation of reforms in the energy sector of Uzbekistan, as well as provide financial support and the involvement of authoritative international experts. And the most important thing is the opportunity through this fruitful partnership to introduce the best, modern, effective world practices in the country,” Energy Minister Alisher Sultanov said.

During the round table, recommendations and roadmaps for further reforming the electricity and oil and gas industries were discussed, in the preparation of which international experts and consultants from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development took part.

Experts noted that the implementation of such large-scale reforms in the energy sector will make it possible to introduce modern methods of corporate governance and transition to market mechanisms.

In addition, it will be possible to improve the quality of services that provide an affordable and guaranteed supply of electricity and natural gas to consumers, achieve financial sustainability of the energy industry, energy-efficient production and consumption of energy resources.
