Oil&Gas Materials 6 December 2006 11:26 (UTC +04:00)

Azerbaijan began receiving electricity from Iran in Astara, southern region, via the Astara (Iran)-Astara (Azerbaijan)-Parsabad (Iran)-Imishli (Azerbaijan) electricity lines. Marlen Asgarov, the Vice President of Azerenerji, informed Trendthat that at present Iran is supplying Azerbaijan with a capacity of 20 MW of electricity.

Earlier Azerbaijan and Iran signed an electricity system contract to take effect on 1 December 2006, whereby Azerbaijan would import 600-700 KW/h electricity per month from Iran during the winter period. This loan would then be returned during the summer period when Iran was at a deficit.

At present Iran, due to technical reasons, is unable to increase the electricity supply.

Iran is carrying out technical work within its territory to increase the capacity of the electricity supply. The amount of electricity received from Iran will depend upon the resolution of electricity imported from Russia, Asgarov stressed.
