Iran aims to provide internet for its villages, including least populated ones

TEHRAN, Iran, June 15

Iran's Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) plans to connect all of the country's villages to the national internet network by the end of the current Iranian year (started March 20,2020), said Minister Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi, Trend reports citing IRNA.

"Around 90 percent of country's villages have internet access today. And we're seeking do do the same for smaller villages of 20 or more residents" said the minister.

Jahromi made the remark during the inauguration of internet access provision in 1,034 villages across the country.

Iranian telecommunications company Irancell and the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology have jointly invested in this project.

"A total of $72 million has been invested to connect 1,034 villages to the national internet network" Jahromi said.

"We aim to develop the national internet network to improve digital economy during the coronavirus spread and to create jobs," he added.

"Irancell, is a front running operator in digital economy and startups," Jahromi said, adding that the operator's work helped to create 2,300 direct and 70,000 indirect jobs.
