Candidates for members of Maslikhats (local representative body) from the Kazakh National Social Democratic Party urged the party's leadership to refuse from participating in the elections to the Majilis (lower chamber of parliament) and maslikhats, CA-NEWS reported.

"We urge the political leadership of the NSDP and the party's members not to participate in the elections to the Majilis and maslikhats," the party members said.

They grounded their appeal with the events in the city of Zhanaozen.

Mass riots hit the Kazakh oil town of Zhanaozen on Dec.16 killing 17 and injuring more than 100 people. Buildings and cars were burned and property of individuals and legal bodies destroyed. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev declared a state of emergency in Zhanaozen until Jan.31.

Kazakh Constitutional Council Chairman Igor Rogov said voting at parliamentary elections would not be held in Kazakh Zhanaozen due to the state of emergency.

Earlier NSDP appealed to the Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev to postpone the parliamentary elections due to the events in Zhanaozen.
