Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed the law On ratification of Agreement between the United Nations and the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan to open the UN office in Kazakhstan, presidential press-service reported on Monday.
The Agreement was signed on Oct. 5, 1992 in New York and entered into force upon signature. It is aimed at strengthening of cooperation and understanding between Kazakhstan and the United Nations.
According to Article 5 of the Agreement, the UN opens and maintains its office in Kazakhstan to fulfill its assumed obligations under the Agreement.
Some items of the Agreement contradict the existing Kazakh legislation. In particular, the agreement envisages that the office and its staff, and members of their families will take advantage of immunities and privileges in taxation, prosecution and protection of their property.
Thus, according to the legislation of Kazakhstan, the agreement can be applied in its entirety only following its ratification.
