Kazakhstan's National Security Committee is involved in a special operation to neutralize the members of Takfir wal-Hijra religious-extremist organization in the country, the committee said in a message Dec. 21.
"Sixteen people were detained on suspicion of inciting religious hatred and being involved with Takfir wal-Hijra,” the message said. “Takfir wal-Hijra members’ houses are being searched and operative-investigative, procedural measures are being taken.”
Operative measures are being carried out in Almaty, Aktobe, Atyrau regions and Almaty city, the message said.
According to the committee, members of Takfir wal-Hijra organization propagandize the principles of the ideology of Al-Qaeda, “Islamic State” (aka IS, ISIL, ISIS or Daesh) and other terrorist groups.
Takfir wal-Hijra was recognized as the extremist organization upon the court decision in 2014. Its activity is prohibited in Kazakhstan. Takfir wal-Hijra is included in the list of terrorist organizations in the US, Russia, China, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and other countries.
