Iran's Permanent Representative to the Vienna-based international organizations, Ali-Asghar Soltanieh, was appointed on Monday as the new chairman of the Group 77 nations and China, the chairmanship will start in January, 2011.

Talking to IRNA after his appointment, the Iranian envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said he, on behalf of the Islamic Republic of Iran, will take this chairmanship for a year.

Soltanieh hoped that the Islamic Republic of Iran will 'neutrally and professionally' fulfill the expectations of the developing states members of the G77.

The Group of 77 at the United Nations is a coalition of developing nations, designed to promote its members' collective economic interests and create an enhanced joint negotiating capacity in the United Nations.

There were 77 states, the founding members of the organization, but the organization has since expanded to 131 member states.
