Iran's Leader deeply regrets Rabbani death

Advisor to the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ali Akbar Velayati has conveyed Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei's condolences over Burhanuddin Rabbani's death to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Press TV reported.

Velayati also expressed his regret over the terror killing of Rabbani, who headed the Afghanistan Peace Council, Fars News Agency reported Saturday.

"Rabbani's martyrdom is more indicative of the weakness of Afghanistan's enemies than their strength," said Velayati, describing Rabbani as not only the "symbol of national unity" in Afghanistan but also an "international role model."

The Afghan president, for his part, called Rabbani's death a great loss for the nation of Afghanistan and stressed that Kabul with do everything in its power to determine the perpetrators behind the assassination.

Rabbani, who was the former Afghan president, was killed in an explosion that took place in his home on September 20, 2011.

Five senior Afghan officials, who were present at the gathering, were also slain in the explosion.

As head of Afghanistan peace council, Rabbani was in charge of Afghan-Taliban talks aimed at reintegrating militants who are willing to lay down their arms.

The initiative to form a peace council was adopted at a traditional gathering, or Jirga, in June 2010 following the failure of the US-led forces in establishing peace in Afghanistan.
