Foreign trade of Azerbaijan (January-November 2012)

The foreign trade turnover with 154 world countries amounted to $30.54 billion in Jan.-Nov. 2012, or 7.88 percent less than Jan.-Nov. last year. The volume of exports decreased by 10.34 percent to $22.094 billion compared to the same period of 2011. The volume of import increased by 0.76 percent and hit $8.444 billion. Azerbaijan exported 2,196 products, and imported 6,279 different goods. The index of export exceeded import as of Jan.-Nov. 2012. This formed the foreign trade surplus to the amount of $13.65 billion.

As in previous periods, oil and oil products are mainly exported from Azerbaijan.

However, the decline in oil production volumes in the country has reduced exports, and consequently has also reduced the foreign trade turnover of the country

Most of Azerbaijan's exports (85.03 percent) fell to the export of crude oil in Jan.-Nov. 2012.

The exports of crude oil decreased by 1.4 percent compared to the same period of 2011.

The exports of petroleum products declined by 14.8 percent. As of December 1, 2012, around 5.5 percent of total exports from the country fell to the oil products.

Azerbaijan also reduced gas export in October.

Azerbaijan increased gas exports (customs clearance) by 93.3 percent in November compared to October. Its volumes increased by 7.1 percent for 11 months. As of November, the share of gas in total export volume was 2.54 percent compared to 2.61 percent for 2011.

In January-November, Azerbaijan exported chemical products worth $144.5 million. According to the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee, exports of chemical products increased by 35.1 percent compared to the same period of 2011.

This is connected with its increased production in the country. The share of chemical products was 0.65 percent in the total volume of exports in January-November.

The success of the country in exports of aluminum and its products should be stressed. As of Jan.-Nov., Azerbaijan increased aluminum export by 15.5 times compared to the same period of 2011.

In total, during the period, aluminum worth $87.769 million were sold abroad. The share of exports of aluminum and aluminum goods, of the total export volume of the country was 0.4 percent as of Dec. 1.

Azerbaijan has two aluminum plants - in Sumgait and Ganja, as well as its own raw material base (alunite). This fully provides the domestic market with these products and there are export opportunities.

The export growth for the period was observed in agricultural products, in particular, taking into account the cotton harvest season. The cotton exports from the country increased by 69.17 percent compared to the same period of last year.

In this period, the highest amount of export fell on Italy. Thus, during the reported period Azerbaijan exported commodities to Italy totaling $5.133.6 bln which makes up 23.24 percent of total exports. Mainly oil and oil products are exported to this country. Israel ($1.666.5 bln) and Indonesia ($1.657.1 bln) hold leading positions. Italy has maintained its leading position since 2008 excluding early three months. Turkey took a lead in January and U.S. in February and March 2008.

Turkey ranks first on largest import volume ($1.272.9 billion) in January-November 2012. About 15.07 percent of the Azerbaijani imports fell to it. Russia ranks second - $1.199.8 billion and Germany - third ($677.1 million).

Most of Azerbaijan's imports (26.96 percent) in Jan.-Nov. accounted for the imports of machines, equipment, electric vehicles and their spare parts.

However, imports of these products decreased by 15.11 percent compared to the same period of 2011. The imports of vehicles and spare parts decreased by 7.45 percent, although this import retained a significant share in the country's import (15.78 percent).

The import of vehicles maintained a significant share in the country's import despite the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee has imposed a ban on imports of "VAZ-21144" and "VAZ-21154" cars, imported into the country under the state guarantee agreements since Oct. 1, 2012.

According to the State Statistics Committee, in January-November, the country imported 92,828 cars to the amount of $1.044.6 billion.

Some 996 vehicles of this volume are intended for transporting 10 people or more, including the driver. The total cost of the vehicles was $48.285 million. The number of imported cars, mainly for transporting people and other motor vehicles amounted to 82,204 worth $713.3 million, motor vehicles for cargo transportation - 8,631 worth $199.7 million, special vehicles - 997 worth $83.3 million.

Import of ferrous metals ranks third (12.81 percent of total import volume).

At the same time, grain imports significantly increased in January-November 2012 compared to the same period of 2011 (by 24.13 percent). Its import share is 0.91 percent. But imports of flour significantly reduced (by 95.05 percent).

In late September, the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers signed a resolution to exempt imported wheat, meslin, wheat and wheat-rye flour from the value added tax (VAT) for the period of one year.

According to the State Customs Committee, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with CIS countries in Jan.-Nov. amounted to $3.173.6 billion or 10.39 percent of total volume of Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover. Exports to CIS countries for the period totaled $1.096.2 billion (4.96 percent of total export) and imports - $2.077.4 billion (24.6 percent of total import). As a result, the country had a red ink in trading with them to the amount of $981.1 million compared to the surplus worth $351.6 million in 2011.

During this period, about 8,255 legal and physical entities were involved in foreign trade operations, including 3,748 - legal entities and 4,507 - physical entities.

The share of public sector in exports totaled $20.817 billion (94.2 percent), private - $1.066 million (4.8 percent), the share of physical entities - $210.8 million (0.95 percent).

The share of public sector in import operations amounted to $1.818 billion (21.53 percent), the private sector - $6.284 billion (74.41 percent), physical entities -$341.799 million (4.05 percent).
