President of Syria grants general amnesty

President of Syria Bashar al-Assad on Monday issued a legislative decree granting general amnesty for the crimes committed before March 7, 2011, SANA reported.

The granted general amnesty includes:

- Misdemeanors.

- Breaches of law.

- Rehabilitation for delinquents.

- Domestic army deserters included in Article 100 of the Military Penal Code, whereas those in hiding are not included in this clause unless they turn themselves in within 60 days of the date of issuing this decree.

- Deserters who fled the country included in Article 101 of the Military Penal Code, whereas those in hiding are not included unless they turn themselves in within 6 months of the date of issuing this decree.

- Temporary sentence for the convicted who reached age 70 by the date of issuing this decree.

- Temporary or life sentence for the convicted afflicted with fatal and incurable disease by the date of issuing this decree.

- The last two paragraphs do not include those in hiding by the date of issuing this decree.

The decree is to be published in the official gazette and to go into effect from the date of its issuance.
