Regime forces in Yemen have opened fire on anti-government protesters, killing a 13-year-boy and injuring dozens of others in the cities of Sana'a and Taizz, Press TV reports.

The violence erupted on Thursday when gunmen loyal to embattled Ali Abdullah Saleh targeted protesters who had poured into the streets.

Similar protest rallies were also held in the city if al-Bayda, where demonstrators joined their countrymen in the capital and the flashpoint city of Taizz to call for the prosecution of Saleh.

The protesters called on the international community not to give any immunity from prosecution to Saleh and those regime officials responsible for the killing of civilians.

The Saleh regime is accused of killing hundreds of protesters since the eruption of a popular revolution in the country in late January.

Yemen has been the scene of massive protests by hundreds of thousands of people calling an end to widespread corruption and poverty in the country, and demanding the ouster of the Saleh regime.

The latest round of violence in Yemen came as the UN's special envoy Ben Omar earlier arrived in the country to discuss a way for a power transfer with regime officials and the opposition.

An initiative proposed by the Persian Gulf's Arab states offers Saleh immunity in return for resignation, which the Yemeni protesters have rejected as against their revolutionary demands.
