Riots that broke out following a football match in northern Egypt left 73 people dead, local media quoted Health Ministry sources as saying, dpa reported.

Egyptian state television reported that 73 people were killed and 1,000 injured "when fans stormed the football field seconds after the match ended in Port Said."

Some of the dead in Wednesday's clashes were security officers, officials said.

"The deaths ... were caused by suffocation and serious fractures," Dr Hassan al-Isnawi, director of the central hospital in Port Said, was quoted as saying by al-Ahram Sports website.

The riots broke out after a game between Egypt's al-Ahali and al-Masri teams in Port Said and following a rare win by al-Masri 3-1 against al-Ahali, a top football team in the country.

Egypt's state television said fans of al-Masri surrounded the players of the rival team and their supporters on the field and started pelting them with stones and bottles.

Egyptian media described the incident as "the worst in the history of Egypt's football."
