Gunmen Saturday attacked an army outpost near the town of Bani Walid in south-eastern Libya, killing at least 15 soldiers, reported the state-run news agency LANA.

Five soldiers were wounded in the pre-dawn attack, added the agency. No one has claimed responsibility.

The hilltop town was one of the strongholds of the regime of former dictator Moamer Gaddafi during a 2011 armed revolt against his rule.
Libya's new leaders have been struggling to assert their authority and re-establish security in the North African country since Gaddafi was overthrown and killed in October 2011.
