( dpa ) - Ukrainian police shot dead a Rottweiler after the dog killed its owner, Fakty newspaper reported on Thursday.
The attack took place in a private residence in the Black Sea port city of Feodosia.
The victim, a woman aged 46, had taken the animal in as a stray. She died of bite wounds to the head and neck, and blood loss.
The dog also mauled the woman's husband when he arrived home from work, found his wife dead, and attempted to force the animal to give up the body. Aside from the dog and the woman, no one else had been in the house.
Police called to the scene by neighbours required three pistol shots to kill the animal.
The Rottweiler had lived with the couple for several months and had shown no signs of excessive aggression, according to the article.
An investigation into the incident was ongoing, but determination of why the attack took place would be difficult, as both the woman and her pet were dead, police spokeswoman Anna Okhremenko said.
