Referendum on Ukraine Membership to NATO May be Held in Two Years

The referendum on membership of Ukraine to NATO may be held in two years, Viktor Yushenko, Ukrainian President, stated. "I believe that we will hold such discussionsand form a common national idea," he noted. The President is sure that during the period Ukraine will join the Membership Action Plan (MAP) in NATO. According to Yushenko, only 3% of the population is informed about NATO. Most people need to be well informed about the alliance.

"The political sovereignty of Ukraine and membership in NATO are identical," the President stated. "Today, we live in a country measuring 7,500 sq.m. and 5,000 sq.m. of the territory was not marked. There is no border. The territory was marked in the map. We have been living independently for 17 years. The Azov and Black Seas, as well as the Kerchen channel have not been delimitated so far," Yushenko stated.

Yushenko stated that all 26 NATO countries had a unanimous positive relation with Ukraine membership to Alliance during the NATO summit in Bucharest from 2 to 4 April.
