Iraq signed on Wednesday a three-billion-dollar agreement with General Electric Energy for the provision of power generation equipment and services to the country, dpa reported.
Under the agreement, General Electric will provide heavy-duty 9E gas turbines, that are capable of supplying about 7,000 megawatts electricity, according to a statement by the company.
The Iraqi government plans to install these turbines all over the country to provide support for the electricity grid.
"The current daily power generation in Iraq is less than 6,000 megawatts, while the demand is more than 10,000 megawatts, which is a clear sign for the shortage of electricity resources in the country," said John Krenicki, General Electric Energy's President and CEO.
With more than 6,000 turbines installed worldwide, General Electric Energy aims to help Iraq address electricity shortages and expand the country's energy infrastructure.
Last May, Iraq signed an agreement with the company to supply the country with eight turbines.
