An avalanche Saturday on the German side of Alps swept away five men using snowboards, killing one of them, police said.

The mass of snow came off the side of the Wallberg, a mountain in the Tegernsee alpine holiday region south of Munich, at about mid-day as the men were making downhill runs in an area not marked out as ski lane, dpa reported.

Police in the city of Rosenheim said one man, aged 28, was dead and a seriously injured 23-year-old was taken by helicopter to hospital, while the other three from the group were safe, but still on the mountain because falling snow made it difficult to evacuate them. Two of those still up the mountain had been slightly hurt.
