Damascus intends to convey a letter to United States Special Envoy in the Middle East George Mitchell during his first visit to Syria with a proposal for Israel to begin indirect talks through Turkey's mediation, the Italian agency AKI reported with reference to Israeli media.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmed Davudoglu during his visit to Washington last week also told the U.S. administration about Syria's intentions to continue negotiations with Israel, as well as under the former government of Ehud Olmert, the Israeli Radio reported.

Davudoglu said that Ankara was ready to mediate in a new round of proximity talks.

At a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President of Israel Shimon Peres, Mitchell discussed the prospects for Arab-Israeli truce, given the tensions in the region.
