Spanish giants Real Madrid announced on Sunday that defender Pepe will be out of action for around six months, DPA reported.

The Brazil-born stopper has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, tests revealed on Sunday. He will undergo surgery in the upcoming days and is expected to be out of action until May at least.

This means that Pepe, who plays for Portugal, will probably miss the World Cup finals.

He tore the ligament in Real's stormy 3-2 win away to Valencia on Saturday, a result which leaves the whites in second place, five points behind leaders Barcelona.

Pepe, 26, was expensively signed by Real from FC Porto in July 2007. He has suffered various injuries in La Liga and was banned for 10 matches last April after a violent assault on Getafe midfielder Francisco Casquero.
