An American woman and her one-year-old baby hiking near Mount Kenya National Park were trampled to death by a charging elephant, Press TV reported.

Sharon Brown, 39, and her daughter, Margaux died instantly on Monday when the elephant charged out of the bush and crushed them about 2 kilometers from Castle Forest Lodge where they were vacationing, a senior police officer said on Wednesday.

"The elephant emerged from the bush at full speed without any warning," said the owner of the lodge, Melia van Laar. "Everybody ran away, but the lady, burdened by the weight of the baby, perhaps, or in panic, was not able to run fast enough."

A US Embassy official said Brown, originally from Miller Place, New York, lived in Nairobi with her husband where they both worked at the International School of Kenya (ISK).

Colleagues and friends at ISK held a memorial service on Wednesday.
