NATO has tasked its disaster response coordination center with overseeing the delivery of aid to Pakistan, after the flood-riddled south Asian country asked it for assistance, the Brussels-based alliance said in a statement Saturday, dpa reported.

Massive floods caused by unusually strong monsoon rains have killed more than 1,600 people and left tens of thousands stranded in Pakistan's north-west and south. New rains are causing more displacements and deaths, and hampering relief efforts.

The coordination centre will particularly focus on the air transport of aid and rescue materials to Pakistan.

Pakistan and NATO have pledged close cooperation over the last few years. The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan has especially been looking for Pakistan to fight the Taliban in the north-west of its territory.
