The technical state of the Metsamor Atomic Power Station (NPS) in Armenia is a real ecological threat for all Southern Caucasus, political scientist Mubariz Ahmadoglu, the head of the Political Technologies and Innovations Center, told Trend reports. It was a comment of the 2-day visit of Muhammad Al-Baradei, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, to Yerevan.
“It is well known that the Metsamor APS regularly suspends the work for technical reasons,” Ahmadoglu noted. He said that the Al-Baradei’s visit to Yerevan was related with the will of the international bodies in urgent closing of the APS.
According to Ahmadoglu, Al-Baradei’s 2-day visit will allow concretization of world community’s position on the problem.
“Information about atomic energy of Armenia had been poor so far and many people did not know that except the Metsamor APS there were 1200 objects related with atomic sphere in Armenia,” Ahmadoglu underlined.
“Armenia is not able to exploit the Metsamor APS irrespective of its guarantees. There is real threat of accident in Armenia, which touch upon whole region,” he stated.
