Tashkent, 12 January / Trend D.Azizov /

The new head of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Uzbekistan Asmus Hammerich and representatives of Uzbek Foreign Ministry discussed on Friday the development of relations between Uzbekistan and the WHO, implementation of joint projects and perspective areas of cooperation, the press-service of the ministry reported on Saturday.

Both sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues.

During the meeting it was noted that Uzbekistan as a member of the Executive Committee of the WHO continues to play a constructive role in addressing the challenges faced by this specialized UN agency for health.

In particular, the success of the representative international symposium named "National model of maternal and child protection in Uzbekistan: Healthy mother - healthy child" that was held in Tashkent in November 2011 contributed to extending the country's experience, not only within the region but also beyond it.

Uzbekistan joined the WHO in May 1992. The scope of the WHO's work in the country includes a number of strategic areas of cooperation that are regularly determined jointly with the Health Ministry.
The previous head of the World Health Organization in Uzbekistan was Michel Tailhades. His mission in the country was completed in October 2011.

The World Health Organization founded in 1948, is a UN specialized agency for health. The WHO Country Office in Uzbekistan is a part of the Regional Office for Europe - one of the six regional offices that make up the structure of the WHO.
