Iran’s population has surpassed 78 million people

Iran's population has surpassed 78 million people, Head of Iran's National Organization for Civil Registration Mohammad Nazemi-Ardakani said.

He said that there are also 2 million Iranians living abroad, so there are totally over 80 million Iranians, IRNA News Agency reported on Dec. 26.

"Iran is the region's 3rd most populated country," he said, adding that the country ranks 10th in Asia.

"70 percent of Iran's population lives in urban areas and the rest in rural areas," the official noted.

"Some 51 percent of Iranians are males, and 49 percent females," he added.

According to Ardakani, some 24 percent of Iranians are under 15 years old, 31 percent between 15-30, 39 percent between 30-60, and 6 percent above 60.

Previous estimates indicated that Iran`s population will reach 80 million people by 2016.
