By Mehdi Sepahvand – Trend:

Iran exports worth $500 million dairy products to Iraq each year, but officials have expressed fear that the market may be lost.

Speaking in an annual Iran-Iraq trade event in Tehran, Said Owhadi, advisor to Iran’s first vice president, said if Iran keeps limiting itself to the exports, it will lose the market to rivals once security conditions in Iraq improve, Fars news agency reported February 14.

“If we are after sustainable development of economic ties with Iraq, our key suggestion is that we should go for joint investment,” he said.

He also said that Iranian dairy products’ image in Iraq is being threatened by the multiplicity of dairies – around 320 companies – that export to Iraq, many of which don’t meet certain standards.

The official also complained saying “we still have no direct transportation system to Iraq”.
