Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said his government is prepared to engage in talks with the European Union over social and legal issues.

In the meantime, he added that familiarizing European countries with Islamic laws will help them arrive at a good understanding of his country’s legal system, IRNA news agency reported October 26.

Speaking in a meeting with the visiting Finnish President Sauli Niinisto, Rouhani said he welcomes mutual understanding and development of friendly bonds.

He underlined that Tehran and Helsinki can develop relations in economy, environment, banking and technology.

Cooperation on fighting extremism and drugs as well as regional disputes was also stressed by President Rouhani.

The Finnish president, for his part, praised last year’s nuclear deal between Iran and world powers as a victory for the global community.

He also said his country can use Iran’s experience in handling Afghan refugees to tackle the refugee crisis that has hit Europe in the wake of the Syrian conflict.

Niinisto also stressed that his country endorses Iran’s accession to the World Trade Organization.

He further expressed interest in opening direct flights and train voyages between the two countries.
