Azerbaijan, Baku, June 14 / Trend E. Mehdiyev /
The Azerbaijani ruling party has condemned the protests against holding the European Football Championship 2020 in the country.
"The protests against the European Football Championship 2020 in Azerbaijan under the pretext of violating human rights in the country are wrong," deputy chairman, executive secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party Ali Ahmadov told media today.
He said that the vast majority of the population in the country supports the country's successful policy and appreciates holding this and other international events within Azerbaijan's policy.
"Holding the grand European song contest in Baku helped to raise the national pride of Azerbaijanis," he added. "If the European football championship is held in our country in 2020, this will enhance our country's reputation. Azerbaijani people and the government are ready to take all actions for the championship to be held in our country. There is a small group of people who oppose it. We call them the opposition. Of course, this is not the whole opposition."
Azerbaijan has made a bid together with Georgia to host the European Championship in 2020.
He also said that the opposition does not want to see Azerbaijan's progress.
"They oppose the country's actions contributing to its development," he stressed. "If any action aimed at increasing the country's recognition is taken, they again oppose. Once again they prove that their personal interests do not coincide with the interests of people. The participation of forces whose interests do not coincide with those of the people, in political life, is impossible. It is clear that the realisation of their demands to the government is also impossible."
He stressed that people cannot support the forces that ignore their interests.
"The opposition has once again proved by its actions that its personal interests contradict those of the people," he said.
