Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has received the Ambassador of Malaysia, Norman bin Muhamad, a message from Turkmen government said on April 9.

The diplomat presented his credentials to the head of state and conveyed the greetings of the Malaysian king and prime minister.

Turkmen president, in turn, emphasized the deep interest of Turkmenistan in further strengthening of the fruitful dialogue with South-Eastern Asian countries, including Malaysia, which is one of the dynamically developing countries in the world.

During the meeting the parties exchanged views on the entire spectrum of the relations and expressed readiness to further diversify the trade and economic relations.

"Regarding this, the opportunities to expand the mutually beneficial partnership in the spheres of fuel and energy complex, business, tourism, education, as well as cultural, humanitarian spheres became one of the main themes during the discussions," the message from Turkmen government said.

The economies of the two countries are mutually complementary. The key spheres of mutual interest include trade, economic, fuel and energy. The two countries opened embassies in July 2013.

Turkmenistan's interest in Malaysia is first of all related to the activity of the Petronas Charigali state oil and gas company which began operating in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea in 1996.

This company started commercial production and export of oil in Turkmenistan in May 2006. The produced raw materials are transported through Azerbaijan. Natural gas production has also become possible in recent years. Transportation of this gas is possible both via the traditional route to Russia, as well as via the projected route to Europe through the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijan.
