Iraqi Communications Minister Mohammed Tawfik Allawi has resigned after accusing Shiite Muslim Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki of "political interference" in his ministry, the National Iraqi News Agency reported.

Allawi has sent his resignation to the prime minister, the report said, DPA reported.

It quoted an unnamed spokesman of the minister as saying that Allawi resigned after facing pressures and "failing to increase the ministry budget."

Allawi, a member of the Sunni-backed Iraqiyya bloc, was part of the national unity government formed in 2010. There has been no word yet from the prime minister on the allegations.

Al-Maliki, who is a Shiite, has been accused by the Iraqiyya bloc of trying to minimize the minority Sunni community's role and to rule Iraq with an iron fist.

Vice President Tarik al-Hashemi, a Sunni and leading member of Iraqiyya bloc, is on trial in absentia after being accused by al-Malki of plotting and financing death squads aimed at assassinating Shiite officials in Iraq. Al-Hashemi has vehemently denied the charges.
