By Huseyn Valiyev - Trend:

Republican Seismic Survey Centre (RSSC) of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) has installed a GPS station in Saatli district of Azerbaijan for the study of horizontal movement of the Earth's crust, the RSSC told Trend on Nov. 20.

The total number of GPS stations is 25. All stations are a part of the general system of space geodesy.

The stations of the global positioning system were installed on the basis of the existing seismic stations in Azerbaijan, including in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The number of such stations is 35.

Currently, the centre is working on the study of horizontal movements of the Earth's crust. GPS stations can determine the dislocation of the crust caused by earthquakes in the region and measure very weak fluctuations in the crust with the highest precision.

All measurement data arrive in a computer center with other types of measurements and are used to predict areas of high seismic activity.
