Forthcoming parliamentary and presidential elections will be an indicator of Georgian progress, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said at a joint press conference with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili.

The press conference was held after the meeting between Mikheil Saakashvili and Herman Van Rompuy behind closed doors at the Presidential Palace.

The President of the European Council welcomed the decision of the President of Georgia to invite a large number of international observers. "It will make the elections as transparent and open as possible," he said, calling on the society to hold political debates.

Van Rompuy stressed that the EU will participate actively in monitoring the elections in Georgia.

Michael Sakashvili, in turn, said Georgia should become a country that is free from bribery.

"It is important that the EU will send observers to our elections, and will actively participate in all phases of the elections, including in the calculation ratings," he said.
