Venice Commission Secretary Regards Limitations of Law Restricting Demonstrations in the Vicinity of Public Premises as Problematic

Politics Materials 30 January 2007 12:22 (UTC +04:00)

Gianni Buquicchio, the Secretary of the Council of Europe Venice Commission, exclusively informed Trend that the organization is kept informed of various attempts, including those by opposition leaders, to organize rallies and demonstrations in the center of Baku. He was commenting on the most recent protest action by the Azerbaijani opposition in relation to the resolution by the Tariff Council on price rises.

The current limitations of the Law, which allow for restrictive interpretations as to holding of demonstrations in the vicinity of public premises, is one of the problematic points which have been discussed with the presidential administration in Strasbourg in December 2006. We have good hopes though that the amendments prepared by the authorities will lead to concrete improvements in this respect, Mr. Buquicchio stressed.
