Internal investments in Road Infrastructure Construction to Increase by 30 times in 2008: Transport Minister

Azerbaijan, Baku, 13 March / corr Trend U.Ismayilova / In 2008 the Azerbaijani Transport Ministry intends to build 10 underpasses, Ziya Mammadov, the Azerbaijani Transport Minister, stated at a Government meeting to discuss the development of infrastructure development with the participation of the Azerbaijani President.

The minister said that the Ministry's nearest plan also includes the construction of a multi-storey car park in the centre of the city.

In 2008-2011 the Ministry intends to build 30 pedestrian underpasses, 14 road junctions, seven automobile parking places, as well as new 96km roads in Baku.

The minister said that although in 2006 AZN 50mln was allocated for the development of the infrastructure out of the public budget, in 2007 the investments comprised AZN 130mln and in 2008 AZN 162mln.

In 2004 domestic investments in the development of infrastructure comprised AZN 16.3mln, whereas in 2007 this figure increased to AZN 464mln and in 2008 to AZN 522mln.

In 2007 some $99.3mln was invested to develop the infrastructure through the international financial institutes, whilst in 2008 this sum was increased to $250mln.

The Azerbaijani Transport Ministry serves to 22,134km highways of the country, including international roads (1,684km), strategically important roads (2,669km), roads of local importance (13,000km), roads in the territory of Baku (1.5km), in the regions of the country (3,300km). The total number of bridges in the territory of the country comprises 1,201.
